5 Ways ChatGPT Can Actually Move the Needle For Your Sales Team
Jake Dunlap
“20+ years in sales… this is the game changer we needed.”
You’re going to want to tag your team on this one.
In my 20+ years in sales, I have encountered numerous technologies promising to revolutionize the sales landscape. But, nothing has quite matched the potential of ChatGPT – this is the game changer we needed.
ChatGPT is a tool that not only saves time but also changes how we approach sales, how we train, and how we lead.
I’m going to cover five ways ChatGPT can move the needle for your business today and get very tactical on different prompt strategies to do so.
All your team has to do is copy and paste these prompts, and you’ll see an immediate increase in your meetings booked and close rates.
1. Pipeline Generation – the strategies I discuss here get people engaged and convince them to get on a call.
2. Onboarding & Re-Onboarding – get reps knowledgeable and performing in half the time. Build their knowledge of your buyers and industry by getting them to interact and train in a controlled setting.
3. Sales Skills Training – reps usually excel at one part of the cycle and struggle in others. We all have our strengths and weaknesses: craft training programs and role-playing scenarios to coach more effectively.
4. & 5. Crafting Better Pitches & Telling a Better ROI Story – I’ll roll this into one. Every conversation a rep has, they can use ChatGPT to prep for and get them thinking about things they may not have considered. Prep for discovery, objections, solution matching, different stakeholders… the list goes on.
Recap: 5 Ways ChatGPT Can Actually Move the Needle for Your Sales Team
Skip ahead to:
-
- 4:02 – If you haven’t started using custom instructions in ChatGPT, go check it out now. Custom Instructions allows you to tell ChatGPT certain things that it should know or act like all the time.
- 6:03 – The first way to move the needle for your business is by building/generating pipeline. Prompt example live.
- 9:03 – The second way is onboarding – or if you’ve been in a position for a while, it works for skill development.
- 10:13 – You can train ChatGPT to be a role-play friend. Prompt example live.
- 12:30 – If you’re trying to get up to speed on something, ChatGPT is how you do it.
- 13:30 – The third way is ongoing skills training. If you’re a leader, this is important, but if you’re a rep out there, you own your own skill development. Prompt example live.
- 15:30 – If you take away one prompt or type of prompt that will move the needle, this skills training one is one of the best.
- 20:24 – The fourth and fifth ways to move the needle for your sales team are building your pitch and telling a better ROI story.
- 23:51 – Don’t go to your manager first… go to ChatGPT first. It can help you develop the idea and then go to your manager.
- 25:20 – ChatGPT will give you an idea that’s new or different or that you forgot because you’ve been in sales for a long time… every time.
- 25:44 – We’ve had a lot of sales technology that has come out in the past 5-6 years, but this is the game changer.
Pipeline Generation
Right off the bat, this first one will move the needle quickly by increasing the quality of meetings your reps generate and have.
ChatGPT can be your go-to tool for understanding potential clients better and crafting strategies that resonate with them. You can ideate sequence steps and strategies and quickly write variations, video scripts, social posts and comments, etc. It can do way more than craft a C- email.
-
- Prompt 1: Explain the typical duties and obligations for the following persona. Also, explain the common challenges or pain points this persona faces. Persona = CMO. Industry = Fintech.
-
- Prompt 2: Write me a 10-step sales sequence over 21 days, including Email, Calls, LinkedIn, and video.
-
- Prompt 3: If my target is a CMO in Fintech, I sell a marketing automation platform for small businesses, how would you incorporate their common challenges and pain points into these sequence steps?
Boom. You’ve just built a sequence outline including what areas to focus on in your messaging in less than five minutes.
Onboarding and Re-Onboarding
This is where people start to lose their minds. Used for both knowledge and skill building, reps can simulate sales situations and interact with a “buyer” in a controlled setting.
Integrating ChatGPT into your onboarding can facilitate a smoother learning curve for new reps as well as senior reps looking to refresh their knowledge or re-onboard. It has the potential to help reps grasp industry nuances and buyer behavior in weeks versus a year of meetings and at-bats with different buyers.
-
- Prompt: I’ve talked to many of these CFOs, and many times they are happy with the status quo. So even when we can pitch them a return on investment, they tend to push the decision. Here is a link to their investor relationship page, [insert the link]. Please find two points related to our product, [with the link], that would be good to get the CFO to take action and can we do a 5 question back and forth role play where I feed a value proposition, you can voice an objection, I’ll respond, and then tell me if it works?
Sales Skills Training with ChatGPT
If you’re a leader, this is important, but if you’re a rep out there, you can own your own skill development.
During months of trials and brainstorming, I started to use ChatGPT more heavily for role-playing, specifically around ongoing skill building. Managers can build personalized training programs and talked tracks, saving them a substantial amount of time, but again, reps can be empowered to self-diagnose areas of improvement and use ChatGPT to work on them proactively.
-
- Prompt Example 1: I am a sales manager and have a sales rep who is able to get meetings with frontline employees of a prospect but struggles to get the executive team involved? Specifically, they need to be able to communicate our benefits at a more strategic vs tactical level. Help me to write an 8-week training program, with weekly agendas, 45 min meeting each to work with him on this skill?
-
- Prompt Example 2: I am a sales manager and have a sales rep who has missed quota for the last two months. His activity level is below his peers but the real issue is his quality of sales calls. He tends to not listen to their needs and just go through the motions on the demo. I need to have a performance conversation with them. Can you role-play with me where you are the rep and I am the leader? He may be apprehensive about the feedback, so push back at times.
Crafting Better Pitches & Telling a Better ROI Story
Four and five, I’m rolling into one because they build on each other.
A compelling pitch is an art, and ChatGPT is pretty damn reliable in mastering this art. It can help you anticipate potential objections, enabling you to build pitches that resonate well with your target audience. It’s also a valuable resource in refining talk tracks to communicate benefits strategically. This leads to being able to tell a better ROI story.
Articulating a compelling ROI story often becomes the deal-breaker in closing a sale. ChatGPT can be your assistant in developing proposals that align your product benefits with the business language of whoever you’re talking to – helping you tailor proposals to address a customer’s specific concerns and interests, and ultimately increasing your close rate.
Objection Handling:
-
- Prompt 1: Help me role-play a future meeting with a prospect. These are the 3 objections he brought up in a previous call [XYZ]. This is how I think I should address them [XYZ]. He is the [title] of a [industry] company. Knowing that he will push back, how might he respond to my answers?
-
- Prompt 2: How should I respond to convince him we are the right solution?
-
- Prompt 3: What if he agrees with points one and two but not point three?
-
- Prompt 4: Let’s assume I’m having this same call with a [title] in [industry]. How might this call play out differently? Act as both parties and run the entire call.
Proposal Writing:
- Prompt: I’ve had multiple conversations with the CRO of a major e-commerce company that is having trouble with their current outbound strategy. He expressed interest in [insert a link to your website or give context, such as “outbound performance management”]. I want to best frame how we can help with this issue in his business language. His company sells to manufacturing buyers typically. Please help me develop a proposal that clearly aligns how our product can help the CRO in their own business terms vs our products.
